How I went from skeptical to energy healer and why I chose this path
Hi, my name is Torrie, and I’m the heart behind Spiral Quest Healing. I want to share a little about what led me into energy work, because it wasn’t something I always believed in, understood, or planned to do professionally.
About a decade ago, I attended my first energy healing conference. At the time, this whole world felt foreign to me. It felt a little woo woo, a little strange, and honestly not really my vibe. I went with an open mind, no expectations, and mostly just saw it as a girls’ day experience. I wasn’t searching for healing, answers, or anything life changing. I just wanted to enjoy the day.
There were several practitioners there offering sound healing sessions. I had no real understanding of what sound healing was, how it worked, or what it was supposed to do. I didn’t go in with goals or intentions. I simply laid down and allowed myself to experience it.
What happened surprised me.
The shift I felt in my body and in my spirit was intense. It was noticeable and undeniable, even though I couldn’t explain why it was happening. I left that experience with something I hadn’t expected at all. Curiosity. A deep need to know more.
From there, I spent years attending group sound baths, working with individual energy healers, and exploring different modalities purely for my own personal healing. I began to notice how energy work impacted me on a different level than therapy or medication alone had for my mental health.
I want to be very clear here. I do not believe energy work replaces therapy, medical care, or medication. I see it as a powerful complement. Something that can work alongside what you are already doing to support your well being. For me, it helped bridge gaps that other approaches hadn’t fully reached.
For a long time, I never imagined this would become my profession. Like many people, I followed the path that made the most sense on paper. I worked as a federal employee. That meant stability, insurance, benefits, a predictable schedule, and a clear retirement path. It was safe. It was reliable. I was good at my job, and it paid well.
But it wasn’t purpose driven.
It was a paycheck. Show up, do my job to the best of my ability, go home, and repeat. I continued my own energy healing journey on the side, but I never considered stepping into that world professionally. I saw energy workers as people with special gifts, something unique that I didn’t believe I had. I admired them, respected them, and assumed they were somehow different from me.
Everything changed when federal cuts began earlier this year. Departments were being reduced, people were losing their jobs, and we were told that a large percentage of our department could be let go. There was an option to leave voluntarily with temporary pay, and suddenly I was standing at a crossroads.
I knew what I was doing wasn’t what I wanted to do forever. It was stable, but it wasn’t fulfilling. I had a decision to make.
That was when I chose to go to school for massage therapy.
Massage therapy became the gateway that shifted everything for me. It showed me that I didn’t have to be special or gifted in some mystical way to help facilitate healing. I learned that I could be a facilitator for health, someone who creates a safe space for the body to release, reset, and heal itself.
That realization gave me the confidence to explore energy work more deeply. I enrolled in training programs, asked questions, and sought to understand the why and the how behind sound healing, because that was the modality that had impacted me the most personally.
From there, energy work felt like a natural expansion.
I’ve always been empathetic and intuitive, but for a long time I didn’t trust myself to work with other people’s energy. Anyone who identifies as an empath knows how overwhelming it can be to constantly absorb what’s around you. Learning how to protect my own energetic field while helping others was a turning point. It showed me that I could support others without sacrificing myself in the process.
Energy work, to me, is about grounding, clearing, and creating space. It’s about helping people move through energetic blockages that may be holding them back from their fullest potential. It’s not about fixing anyone. It’s about facilitating a process where the body, mind, and spirit can do what they already know how to do.
I am not here to replace therapists, doctors, or medication. I believe deeply in professional support and mental health care. Energy work does not have to conflict with medical treatment or belief systems. It can work alongside them. When approached with openness, it can become another tool in a larger healing toolbox.
My hope is to offer this work to people who may have never experienced it before. People who are curious but unsure. People who feel something is missing but don’t quite know what. I believe there is real benefit in allowing yourself to experience energy work with an open mind and an open heart.
My heart is fully in this work. I truly want to leave people better than I found them. Through the professional upheaval and uncertainty I experienced, I found the courage to step forward and say that I believe I can help make a difference.
I may not be able to help everyone. I may not be able to throw every starfish back into the ocean. But if I can make a meaningful difference for even one person, then this path is worth it.
I am deeply grateful for the journey that led me here, and I look forward to seeing what the future holds for Spiral Quest Healing and for those who invite me into their lives and their healing journeys.
